Pelvic utilization is the conscious engagement of the pelvis to generate power and efficiency in slalom skating — especially one-foot techniques like backward heel wheeling. It replaces reliance on raw leg muscle force, which causes fatigue and plateaus.
Internal vs External Focus
Two ways to think about movement:
- External focus — the visible outcome (e.g. "arm raised to shoulder height")
- Internal focus — the body mechanics producing it (e.g. "shoulder abducted to shoulder line")
External focus drives early improvement. At advanced levels, internal focus on pelvic mechanics becomes essential — external cues alone are insufficient.
Why the Pelvis
- Leg-force-only approach plateaus hard (~20 cones) and causes fatigue
- Shifting internal focus to the pelvis unlocks exponential gains (40 → 80 → 100+ cones)
- Applies across most one-foot slalom techniques, not just backward wheeling
- Often partially present in a skater's movement before they consciously realise it
