12-week periodization plan to break the toe wheeling plateau
the problem
Progressed from 5x2min to 4x2min30s wall-supported holds, then stalled. Same stimulus → accommodation → no further adaptation. Need to rotate training focus.
intensity lever
| Variant | Intensity | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-supported hold | Low-moderate | Endurance work, deload |
| Unsupported hold (no wall) | High | Strength and power work |
| Unsupported hold → immediate cone work | Max | Power / transfer work |
mesocycle 1 — strength (weeks 1-4)
Goal: Build max single-leg isometric strength on toe wheels
Primary sessions (2-3x/week):
- 5-6 x 45s-1min unsupported holds
- Last 15s of each hold should be a fight to maintain
- Rest 2-3min between holds (full recovery for quality)
- Progress: Week 1 → 5x45s, Week 2 → 5x50s, Week 3 → 6x50s
Maintenance (1x/week):
- 2 x 2min supported holds (keep endurance from regressing)
Week 4 — Deload:
- 3 x 45s at ~80% effort
- Focus on form: toe height, no knee bend, weight along cone line not on ankle
mesocycle 2 — power / dynamic (weeks 5-8)
Goal: Translate static strength into dynamic wheeling quality
Primary sessions (2-3x/week):
- 6 x 30s max effort unsupported holds
- After each hold, immediately transition to wheeling through 10 cones
- The transition is the training — carrying max-effort fatigue into skill execution
- Progress: increase cone count or decrease spacing each week
Maintenance (1x/week):
- 3 x 45s unsupported holds (keep strength)
Week 8 — Deload:
- 3 x 30s at ~80% + casual cone work
mesocycle 3 — endurance / application (weeks 9-12)
Goal: Extend duration on a stronger base; integrate into routine practice
Primary sessions (2-3x/week):
- 4 x 3min+ supported holds (should feel easier than old 2:30 — you're stronger now)
- 1 x max unsupported hold per session (test your new ceiling)
- Progress: add 15-30s per hold each week
Application (1-2x/week):
- Routine sections requiring sustained toe wheeling
- Choreo practice with combo difficulty chains
Week 12 — Deload + Retest:
- Retest: max supported hold, max unsupported hold
- Compare to pre-plan baseline
- Decide next macrocycle focus
weekly template
| Day | Mesocycle 1 | Mesocycle 2 | Mesocycle 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | Strength (unsupported) | Power (hold → cones) | Endurance (supported) |
| Tue | Cone work / routine | Cone work / routine | Cone work / routine |
| Wed | Strength (unsupported) | Power (hold → cones) | Endurance (supported) |
| Thu | Rest or light skate | Rest or light skate | Rest or light skate |
| Fri | Endurance maintenance | Strength maintenance | Application / choreo |
| Sat | Strength (unsupported) | Power (hold → cones) | Max unsupported test |
Adjust to your actual 4-5 day schedule. The principle: 2-3 days primary focus, 1 day maintenance, rest is application.
bob bowman integration
Dream: Smooth, sustained toe wheeling in choreographed routines with clean difficulty chains
Short range: Complete this 12-week periodized block
Immediate (WIN): Each session has ONE focus — strength OR power OR endurance. Never mixed. That's your "What's Important Now."
"Practice getting the best possible performance in the worst possible conditions"
Unsupported holds = your worst condition. That's where the growth is.
"High performance is a natural outcome of all your small decisions"
tracking
Log after each session in training_log (or via /skating-coach log):
- Hold durations achieved
- Supported vs unsupported
- RPE (rate of perceived exertion, 1-10)
- Any form breakdown (knee bending, weight on ankle)
RPE trending down at same duration = getting stronger. Time to progress. See coaching_principles for the progress / hold / back-off triggers.
